I am Subhayan Mukerjee. And welcome to my personal webspace.
I am a graduate student at the Annenberg School for Communication of the University of Pennsylvania. I study online news media, often using computational methodologies.
I am a Bengali, and have lived most of my life in Calcutta. In 2009 I was sent to the barren wastelands of Pilani so that I could pursue degrees in mathematics and computer science. In hindsight, this transfer opened my eyes to a lot of new things and gave a certain direction to my thoughts and principles - many of which govern my life today.
After two years of working in the software and data analytics industry, I decided to take the leap into graduate school life. Having been on a primarily technical/quantitative career trajectory, the social sciences beckoned me because of one fictitious character - Hari Seldon, in my favourite novel - the Foundation trilogy. It is probably as a result, that the intersection of computational methods and social questions continues to drive my research inquiries in grad school. Outside my research, I do my best to try and keep up with emerging trends in the global technology landscape. I often write essays about them, which you'll find in my blog.
I am extremely eclectic by nature, and a lot of what I think, and strive to achieve is greatly fueled by my interest in the evolution of scientific thinking and both, Eastern and Western philosophy. If I had to name my four favourite individuals who have had the greatest influence on me, they would be (in no particular order) Plato, Kurt Gödel, Alan Turing, and Adi Sankaracharya.
I love reading hard science fiction and fantasy fiction. I also like to watch comedy television shows - particularly British ones.
I am more of an indoor than an outdoor person, but I do follow sports religiously. I have been following Formula 1 for the better part of two decades now, and I am also a supporter of the Arsenal Football Club (I know, it's tough).
